• Lithothamne, Lithothamnium calcareum, is a red alga from the Corallinaceae family.
• Like coral, its thallus forms arbuscules several centimetres long, as well as branches a few millimetres in size. It develops on sandy seabeds of certain bays at a depth of about thirty metres.
• Its very slow growth allows it to filter and absorb all the nutrients from the sea, notably calcium and magnesium, which it manages to retain thanks to its remarkable porosity.
  Lithothamne thus contains 25 to 34% calcium and 1.7 to 3.3% magnesium.
