What is nigella?

• Nigella is a genus of flowering plants of the Ranunculaceae family. Annual plants with finely divided foliage. There are about twenty species.
  Some were formerly consumed, as seeds or as a spice, and still are in some countries or cultivated as ornamental species.
• Also called black cumin, it is mentioned in ancient Egypt notably as a universal remedy and called “blessed seed”. Its name can be found in current versions of the Bible and it is mentioned in various sacred texts of Islam.
• The main species is nigella sativa. It originates from the Middle East and India.
• There are more than 2,000 medical studies from universities worldwide on nigella seed.
