What is the composition of the dietary supplement Oaky?
Oaky is composed of vinegar with oak extract (quercus) and vitamin C
For 6 ml vinegar with oak extract: vitamin C 30mg (37.5% of the RDA)
Vinegar:
Vinegar is an aqueous solution with a low acetic acid content, mainly used in human food as a condiment and food preservative (Wikipedia).
Oak: quercus
Quercus represents 28% of the French forest, from the Fagaceae family which includes more than 300 species. It has a very distinctive bark, with deep longitudinal grooves. As for the leaves, they are lobed, sometimes toothed or spiny. When dry, they only fall with the arrival of new leaves. They are evergreen in the holm oak and cork oak.
The discreet flowering takes place from May to June. The acorns or achenes fall in autumn but it takes at least 50 years to obtain them.
It needs well-drained soil, light and space as it is the tallest tree in European forests, it can reach 35m high and as such does not appreciate competition from other trees. That is why it has often symbolised power and vitality.
A bit of history:
Oak has always aroused enthusiasm and respect. Jupiter is said to have made it his emblem. The Celts and Gauls worshipped it, the Bretons called it the tree of God....
And let us not forget the centenary oak of Guernica under which the assemblies of the region were held. This oak is the symbol of the traditional freedoms of the Biscayans, and by extension of the Basques. That is why Guernica was bombed in 1937 by Hitler’s air fleet. It was the first aerial bombing of a civilian population. Picasso denounced this massacre in a huge painting.
Oak wood: a must-have
For a very long time, it was the most used wood in Europe for building boats, frameworks or barrels due to its beauty and hardness. However, patience is necessary as it takes a century and a half to obtain a trunk with a diameter of 70 cm.
The appearance of this wood:
A light brown to yellow-brown shade
A medium grain, straight grain
A smooth and silky touch
Good resistance for outdoor use
Oak and its tannins:
All parts of the oak: bark, leaves and acorns contain tannins. The bark alone contains between 15 to 20% tannins.
What is a tannin?
It is an organic substance found in many plants, particularly in bark and wood. Tannins are complex phenolic compounds. In the past, tannins were used to tan hides making them more supple.
There are 2 types of tannins: hydrolysable and condensed. Oak contains both.
Oak also has therapeutic virtues still used today in phytotherapy.
Oak bark:
Its use is found in all popular traditions, and not only to feed squirrels and wild boars.
In North Africa, oak bark decoction has been traditionally used for purgative purposes.
In Germany it has been studied by commission E (commission E for human medicine, phytotherapy section) and the excellent book "Therapeutic Plants" by Max Wichtl and Robert Anton, 2nd edition, Tec & Doc Lavoisier Editions ISBN 2 7430 0631 reproduces excerpts on pages 488 and 489.
Oak bark is also used in Chinese and Korean pharmacopoeias to improve digestion.
