Coenzyme Q10: an important molecule in energy production at the heart of our cells
Coenzyme Q10 or Ubiquinol is an enzyme produced by the body in small quantities.
Coenzyme Q10 or ubiquinol is an enzyme produced by the body in small quantities. By analogy with ubiquity, from the Latin ubique meaning "everywhere", it is found in all cellular compartments (nucleus, membrane, microsome, cytosol).
Its molecule is close to that of vitamin K and its function similar to vitamin E.
Coenzyme Q10 is intimately linked to energy production which falls without a sufficient quantity of COQ10, leading to a decrease in metabolic activity with alteration or even destruction of the cell.
COQ10 is a fat-soluble antioxidant which promotes the burning of fats and sugars within the cell. Widely present in beef heart, it is also found in soy, nuts, sesame, seaweed, sardines and mackerel, and in many green vegetables.
Its actions are notable in cardiac disorders but also for cellular oxygenation and respiration, so it is recommended for athletes who will see an improvement in their tone, endurance and recovery.
An excellent immunostimulant, it increases weight loss in obese people and stabilises it after slimming cures.
Useful against gum disorders but also diabetes, it also helps improve fertility thanks to its action on sperm motility.
Its preferred field remains cardiac function; it should be noted that anti-cholesterol treatments, by lowering cholesterol by 20 to 30%, cause plasma COQ10 concentration to fall by 50%.
Supplementation with CoQ10 then becomes necessary.
