What is Astragalus?
Astragalus are plants of the Fabaceae family belonging to the genus Astragalus, with more than 2500 species.
The botanical name comes from the Latin "astragalus" which itself comes from the ancient Greek "astragalos" meaning "vertebra" or "ankle bone".
The Chinese name for astragalus "Huang Qi" literally means "yellow energy".
Other botanical names: Astragalus penduliflorus, Astragalus propinquus
What does it look like?
The plant generally reaches 30 to 40cm but can be much larger (up to 1m) in some regions. The stems are downy and rigid. Its leaves are made up of 12 to 18 pairs of leaflets. The yellow flowers appear in June and July and are in clusters. However, it takes a few years before pods and thus seeds can be harvested.
The most famous, Astragalus membranaceus, is a perennial plant that grows naturally in China. It is found along shores, estuaries and pine forests in Asia, particularly in northern China and in the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan.
In China it is harvested for traditional uses but also for modern medicine.
Astragalus and Chinese medicine
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) considers astragalus as one of the most important plants and attributes many properties to it.
Primarily, it sees astragalus as "a Qi tonic that strengthens vital energy and has been used for centuries to boost immunity". The use of astragalus is claimed by TCM to strengthen the immune system and its activity.
Astragalus is also used in traditional Korean, Indian (Ayurveda) and Japanese (Kempo medicine) medicines.
For Ayurvedic medicine, astragalus "tones all doshas and especially rebalances Vata. In high doses, it can slightly increase Kapha and Pitta".
