The black alder, Alnus glutinosa, is a deciduous tree of the Betulaceae family, widely present in the native flora of Europe (including Scandinavia).
The black alder grows exclusively in wet areas, particularly along riverbanks where it helps stabilise the banks.
This deciduous tree belongs to the Betulaceae family and is of medium size.
The trunk is covered with a grey-blackish bark that is more or less cracked.
It produces numerous shoots at its base and has a very developed root system. Through symbiotic bacteria, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen and enriches the soils.
The alternate leaves are petiolate.
It bears both male and female flowers. Pollination of the female flowers is carried out by the wind.
The wood is reputed to be rot-resistant and it is said that a city like Venice rests on alder piles.
Today it is a threatened species.
