What is cellular respiration?

The cell, the basic unit of the human body, needs to produce energy in the form of ATP to function.
This production of ATP is called "cellular respiration" and takes place through the breakdown of nutrients in the presence of oxygen. During this complex process occurring in several phases (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain), reduced compounds are created. These will donate their electrons to a series of proteins located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, thus forming the respiratory chain.

The key to health lies in adequate energy production for the cell, therefore good cellular respiration, because mitochondrial ATP production is only achieved if the electron transport chain functions.

The essential actors in the process of cellular respiration are:

NADH: present from the first stage of the respiratory chain, NADH is a coenzyme synthesised from Vitamin B3, aspartate and tryptophan.
NADH is the reduced and stabilised form of Hydrogen which participates in cellular respiration and the creation of energy essential for life.
