Spirulina?

• The scientific name of spirulina is Arthrospira platensis (formerly Spirulina platensis) from the Cyanobacteria family, which includes more than 3000 different species, about 40 of which are edible Arthrospira for humans.
• Spirulina has existed for billions of years and was initially consumed by the Aztecs and Mayans, who dried spirulina to make a greenish powder.
• The first spirulina cultures using traditional methods were therefore carried out in the Andes mountain range.
• In Chad, spirulina was consumed in the form of cakes as early as the 9th century and continues to be used there.
• But it was not until the 1960s that this spiral microalga attracted European interest.
• Since the late 1980s, NASA has also been studying spirulina with the objective of cultivating spirulina for long-duration missions.
• Today, many farms producing spirulina have been established worldwide, notably in France. These are generally organic certified farms.
