• The common walnut, or royal walnut (Juglans regia), of the Juglandaceae family, is a fairly common tree, native to Eurasia, cultivated for its wood sought after in cabinetmaking and its fruits, the walnuts, rich in oil. It is naturally found in Europe as well as Central Asia but today it is cultivated in many parts of the world.
• Walnut trees are fast-growing trees that can reach 20 to 25 m.
• Their bark is light grey.
• The leaves, quite large, are pinnate, with a very aromatic smell when rubbed.
• The male flowers are grouped in hanging catkins while the female flowers are generally arranged in pairs at the ends of the branches.
• The fruits are drupes containing a shell inside which there is a reticulated kernel.
  The fruits are ripe in autumn. The risk of spring frost determines the northern limit of their range.
• Walnut trees are widely cultivated in Europe for several uses: wood, fruits, husk (dye in woodworking), leaves and young shoots.
• The beauty of its wood has made it a prized wood in cabinetmaking.
• Traditionally in the countryside, walnut wine was made with green fruits.
