"Vitis vinifera"
Vines are lianas of the Vitaceae family.
They are plants of the genus Vitis widely cultivated for their clustered fruit, the grape, from which a juice, the must, is extracted and becomes wine after fermentation.
They are climbing shrubs that attach to supports by tendrils.
The woody stems, called canes, pruned in cultivation, can reach very great lengths in the wild by climbing trees.
The palmately veined leaves have five main lobes more or less cut, and are heart-shaped at the base. They show significant polymorphism depending on the varieties and species.
The flowers are very small, greenish and grouped in compound clusters.
The ripe fruits are berries of variable shape and colour.
The main species of vine cultivated in Europe and worldwide is considered to be Vitis vinifera. This species is indeed the origin of many cultivars, called grape varieties, including cabernet, chardonnay, merlot, pinot, sauvignon
