• It is a shrub with upright, cylindrical stems that can reach 1.5 to 2 m high.
  It is a species native to Europe and temperate Asia (from Turkey to China and Japan).
  Its natural habitat is mainly in mountainous undergrowth, generally below 1500 m, but it is also found in plains.
• The stems are biennial and die the second year after fruiting.
  The creeping, perennial rootstock produces new stems each year.
• The stems are armed with slightly prickly thorns.
• It is widely cultivated and often naturalised in temperate countries.
• The cultivation of raspberry seems to date back to the late Middle Ages.
