Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense), sometimes called Rat's tail, Fox tail or Horse tail, is a plant species of the family Equisetaceae.
This perennial plant, 20 to 50 cm tall, has two types of stems: fertile stems and sterile stems.
In both cases, the leaves are reduced to simple collars located at the nodes of the stems and branches, in the form of a short toothed sheath.
In this species, this sheath bears 6 to 12 dark-coloured teeth. The fertile stems are unbranched and therefore do not bear whorls of branches. However, they bear an oblong terminal spike made up of sporangiophores (structures bearing sporangia) arranged in a whorl and stalked, which produce green spores. It produces neither flowers nor fruit. It is a plant living in wet places: it particularly likes ditches, edges of ponds or watercourses.
Be careful not to confuse it with Equisetum hyemale and Equisetum palustre which are toxic.s
